Working with concrete has been a lifelong journey for me, starting from my very first job. I began with decorative concrete when I was young, immersing myself in the craft and learning the intricacies of the trade.
As I grew older, my skills expanded, and I ventured into commercial and industrial projects, gaining invaluable experience along the way. However, I always harbored a dream of starting my own company, one that would reflect my passion and dedication to the art of concrete.
After years of planning, thinking, and praying, I finally felt the time was right to launch Black Diamond Concrete. The name "Black Diamond" symbolizes both the challenge and beauty of working with concrete. When concrete is burned, it turns black, resulting in a shiny, darker surface that signifies both resilience and elegance. My approach to this company is straightforward: "you either do it or you don’t." This philosophy drives us to deliver exceptional quality and craftsmanship in every project we undertake, turning dreams into solid reality.
Concrete can crack due to several factors, including shrinkage during curing, thermal expansion and contraction, and settling. To mitigate cracking, we use control joints, proper reinforcement, and thorough sub-grade preparation. Although it is impossible to completely prevent cracking, we take every measure to ensure it is controlled.
The color of concrete can vary due to differences in raw materials, mixing and curing conditions, and the grade of concrete. When color consistency is crucial, we use specific design and pouring techniques to minimize variations. We may also recommend certain methods to maintain uniform color throughout the project.
We understand that visualizing the final result can be challenging. Our team provides detailed drawings for dimensions, along with pictures of finishes, colors, options, and examples from previous work to help you see the potential outcome. We also guide you through each phase—from concept to formwork, to pouring and finishing—so you know what to expect.
We ensure a quality finish by employing skilled craftsmen, high-quality tools, and well-planned grading and pour designs. The finishing process includes rough raking, screeding flat, bull-floating to eliminate blemishes, and final finishing as discussed. We strive for excellence in every step of the process.
Concrete typically requires 24 to 48 hours to set sufficiently for light foot traffic, but full curing can take up to 28 days. We recommend waiting at least 1 day before walking on it, 1 week before driving on it, and 1 month before pressure washing.
Our project minimum is $3,000.
The type of finish does matter in terms of surface integrity and usability. For example, a burnished driveway, typically used in garages, would be too slick for exterior use when wet. While there are a few limitations, we can achieve most finishes based on your preference.
Yes, air-entrainment is crucial for allowing expansion and contraction due to temperature changes. However, air-entrainment can cause issues if the surface gets burnished. It is suitable for porous finishes like broomed and stamped concrete, which are typically used for exterior surfaces. For interior surfaces like industrial floors, house slabs, and garages, we usually avoid air-entrainment to prevent surface popping.
